The Padma Bridge is a multipurpose road-rail bridge across the Padma River. The construction of the bridge started in November 2014 and is supposed to be completed by June 2021. When completed it will be the largest bridge in Bangladesh. It will connect Mawa of Munshiganj to Jajira of Shariatpur, linking the southwest of the country, to the northern and eastern regions. The Padma Bridge will play a very important role in the economic development of the country. Padma Bridge is the most challenging construction project in the history of Bangladesh. The two-level steel truss bridge will carry a four-lane highway on the upper level and a single track railway on the lower level. The length of the bridge will be 6.24 km while the width will be 18.8 m. The bridge will have a total of 42 pillars. Steel spans will be placed on the pillars. The bridge will have a total of 41 spans. As of October 2020, the construction of 42 pillars out of 42 has been completed. A total of 35 spans out of 41 have been installed. The original cost of the bridge was estimated tk. 10,161 crore in 2007 on the basis of the feasibility study. After several revisions, the cost rose to tk. 30,191 crore. The project is funded by the Government of Bangladesh. The Padma Bridge will connect the country’s southwestern region with the capital via road and rail. Once in service, the 6.24 km-long bridge will connect the capital with 21 southwestern districts. It is expected that the bridge will boost the country’s GDP by 1.2 percent.
